Team Canada won 14 wrestling medals at the Spanish Grand Prix this past weekend in Madrid. In all Canada won two gold medals, four silver medals, and eight bronze medals.
The two Canadian gold medalists at the Grand Prix of Spain were Diana Weicker of Neils Harbour, Nova Scotia, and Laurence Beauregard of Montreal, Quebec. Weicker won gold in the women’s 55 kilogram weight class and Beauregard won gold in the women’s 59 kilogram weight class. It should be noted that the women’s weight classes between 50 and 60 kilograms at the Olympic level are at 50 kilograms, 53 kilograms and 57 kilograms.
Meanwhile, the four Canadian silver medalists were Karla Godinez Gonzalez of Surrey, British Columbia, (women’s 53 kilograms), Ana Godinez Gonzalez of Surrey (women’s 62 kilograms), Aleah Nickel of Swift Current, Saskatchewan (women’s 65 kilograms), and Justina Di Stasio of Burnaby, British Columbia (women’s 76 kilograms). Finally, the eight Canadian bronze medalists were Linda Morais of Tecumseh, Ontario (women’s 68 kilograms), Taylor Follensbee of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (women’s 76 kilograms), Darthe Capellan of Burnaby (men’s 57 kilograms), Logan Sloan of Calgary, Alberta (men’s 57 kilograms), Lachlan McNeil of North York, Ontario (men’s 65 kilograms), Emmanuel Olapade of Calgary (men’s 70 kilograms), Andrew Johnson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (men’s 92 kilograms), and Nishan Randhawa of Abbotsford, British Columbia (men’s 97 kilograms).
