Team Canada won the silver medal on Sunday in a women’s eights World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. This is the first World Cup medal for Canada in 2022 after Canada did not send a rowing contingent to the World Cup in Serbia and the team did not win a medal at the World Cup in Poland.

In the women’s eights, Canada posted a second place time of 6:08.09. Australia won the gold medal with a time of 6:06.51. Romania won the bronze medal with a time of 6:08.19. The Canadian team reached the podium by 11.16 seconds over China, which finished in fourth place with a time of 6:19.25.

The Canadian team was comprised of Canadian Olympic gold medalists Sydney Payne of Victoria, British Columbia, Avalon Wasteneys of Toronto, Ontario, and Kristen Kit of St. Catharines, Ontario. Payne, Wasteneys and Kit won the gold medal for Canada in the women’s rowing eights at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021. The other six Canadian rowers who won silver in Lucerne were Cassidy Deane of Whistler, British Columbia, Morgan Rosts of Jordan, Ontario, Alexis Cronk of London, Ontario, Kirsten Edwards of Port Moody, British Columbia, Jessica Sevick of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Gabrielle Smith of Toronto, Ontario. The silver medal for Canada in Lucerne will give the Canadian women’s eights team confidence as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
