Seven Canadians have qualified for Showdown Sunday of the 2022 Calgary Stampede. They are Shelby Spielman of Ponoka, Alberta (ladies barrel racing), Cody Coverchuk of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan (bull riding), Jared Parsonage of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan (bull riding), Zeke Thurston of Big Valley, Alberta (saddle bronc), Clint Laye of Cadogan, Alberta (bareback), Logan Bird of Nanton, Alberta (tie down roping), and Cody Cassidy of Donalda, Alberta (steer wrestling). Spielman, Coverchuk, Parsonage, Thurston, Laye, Bird and Cassidy reached the Showdown Sunday by finishing within the top four of the Pool A aggregate standings over the first four days of competition. The standings were based on the amount of money won.
Thurston finished in first place in Pool A with $16,500. Laye reached Showdown Sunday by finishing in second place to Orin Larsen of Inglis, Manitoba on Monday. He finished in fourth in the aggregate standings. Coverchuk had the best score in the bull riding with 86 points on Monday, and finished third in the Pool A standings. Parsonage had the fourth best score on Monday with 84.5 points on Monday, and finished fourth in the Pool A standings. Bird struggled on Monday, but was still strong enough to be in second in the Pool A standings with $10,000. Cassidy only finished seventh on Monday, but still finished second overall with $10,500. Finally, Spielman was second in ladies barrel racing on Monday with 17.48 seconds and was fourth in Pool A Standings with $11,000.
Meanwhile in the Rangeland Derby, Kris Molle of Medicine Hat, Alberta had the fastest time at 1:12.94. The overall aggregate leader is Chanse Vigen of Mosseleigh, Alberta, with a time of 4:55.59.
