The New York Islanders have named centre Bo Horvat of London, Ontario captain according to Stefen Rosner of nhl.com on Monday. He is the 10th Canadian captain in the history of the Islanders organization.
Horvat hâd been with the Islanders from 2022 to 2026. In 260 games with the Islanders, he has 99 goals and 99 assists for 198 points. He was a -1 with 101 penalty minutes, 45 power-play points, six shorthanded points, 21 game-winning goals, 803 shots on goal, 2555 faceoff wins, 145 blocked shots, 232 hits, 87 takeaways and 226 giveaways.
With the Islanders this past season, Horvat had 31 goals and 26 assists for 57 points. He was a +8 with 40 penalty minutes, 16 power-play points, one shorthanded point, seven game-winning goals, 226 shots on goal, 690 faceoff wins, 38 blocked shots, 51 hits, 19 takeaways, 69 giveaways and one hat trick. Horvat’s shorthanded point and hat trick came in a 4-2 Islanders win over the Edmonton Oilers on October 16.

Their previous nine Canadian captains have been right winger Ed Westfall of Belleville, Ontario (1972 to 1977), Hockey Hall of Fame left winger Clark Gillies of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (1977 to 1979), Hockey Hall of Fame defenseman Denis Potvin of Hull, Quebec (1979 to 1987), centre Brent Sutter of Viking, Alberta (1987 to 1991), right winger Patrick Flatley of Toronto, Ontario (1991 to 1996), defenseman Bryan McCabe of St. Catherines, Ontario (1997 to 1998), centre Trevor Linden of Medicine Hat, Alberta (1998 to 1999), centre and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Michael Peca of Toronto (2001 to 2004), and centre and Canadian Olympic gold medalist John Tavares of Mississauga, Ontario (2013 to 2018). Peca won gold for Canada at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and Tavares won gold for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
