Week six is now complete and two Canadians registered a touchdown for a winning team. They were Winnipeg Blue Bombers slotback Nic Demski of Winnipeg, Manitoba and British Columbia Lions wide receiver Justin McInnis of Pierrefonds, Quebec.
Demski’s touchdown catch on Friday was dramatic because it came with three minutes and 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter. At the time, the Blue Bombers were trailing 37-33 to the Calgary Stampeders. That is when Zach Collaros threw a 10-yard touchdown catch to Demski and put the Blue Bombers up 39-37. Demski then caught a two-point conversion from Collaros to put the Blue Bombers up 41-37 and close out the scoring. Demski had seven catches for 60 receiving yards for the Blue Bombers. On the season, he has 28 catches for 314 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Meanwhile, it was simply a monster game for McInnis, who tied the Lions’s franchise record for most catches in a game with 14 in the Lions’s 35-20 win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday. He finished the game with 243 receiving yards and one touchdown. McInnis also had one touchdown catch. It came with four minutes and 58 seconds left in the first quarter, and put the Roughriders up 10-0. On the season, McInnis has 45 catches for 725 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
Three other Lions have had 14 catches in a single game. Eric Streater was the first to accomplish the feat in 1989, Ray Alexander accomplished the feat in 1991, and Darren Flutie did it in 1995.
With the win, the Lions improved to 5-1 and into first place in the CFL’s Western Division. The Blue Bombers improved to two wins and three losses.
