For the longest time we did not know if Erin Brooks would be able to represent Canada. She was struggling to get her Canadian citizenship. Tbe 19-year-old Texas born surfing sensation was able to represent Canada because her grandfather was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec and the fact she currently lives in Tofino, British Columbia.
Over the summer Brooks has won World Surf League events in Tahiti (largest island in the French Polynesia) and Fiji. In the process, she has climbed from 19th to eighth place in the World Women’s Surfing Rankings according to the Canadian Press on Thursday.
Brooks now has three World Surf league victories as she also won in Fiji in 2024. Brooks’s win in Fiji two years ago came against Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb in the final. Brooks’s win in Tahiti on August 20 came over Anat Lelior of Israel, and her win in Fiji on Thursday came over Isabella Nichols, who is a Danish-born Australian. Nichols actually withdrew from the final with an ankle injury.
When Brooks won in Tahiti, she made surfing history. That is because she became the youngest surfer to ever win the event. The summer wins for Brooks in Tahiti and Fiji will give her confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
