Dylan Cozens becomes first Yukon player ever drafted in first round of the NHL Draft

Dylan Cozens of Whitehorse made Yukon sports history on Friday by becoming the first player ever from the territory of the Yukon to be drafted in the first round of the National Hockey League Entry Draft.Cozens, a centre who had 84 points in 68 games last season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League, was selected seventh overall by the Buffalo Sabres.

Cozens was one of 11 Canadians selected in the first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. The others were Saskatoon Blades centre Kirby Dach of St. Albert. Alberta (third overall by the Chicago Blackhawks), Vancouver Giants defenseman Bowen Byram of Cranbrook, British Columbia (fourth overall by the Colorado Avalanche), Victoria Grizzlies (British Columbia Hockey League) centre Alex Newhook of St. John’s, Newfoundland (16th overall by the Avalanche), Vegas Golden Knights centre Peyton Krebs of Okotoks, Alberta (17th overall by the Vegas Golden Knights), Sherbrooke Phoenix right winger Samuel Poulin of Blainville, Quebec (21st overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins), Niagara IceDogs centre Philip Tomasino of Mississauga, Ontario (24th overall by the Nashville Predators), London Knights centre Connor McMichael of Ajax, Ontario (25th overall by the Washington Capitals), Moncton Wildcats left winger Jakob Pelletier of Quebec City, Quebec (26th overall by the Calgary Flames), Barrie Colts centre Ryan Suzuki of London, Ontario (28th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes) and Moose Jaw Warriors left winger Brayden Tracey of Calgary, Alberta (29th overall by the Anaheim Ducks).
