Team Canada won their first gold medal on Saturday in the men’s 4×100 metre relay at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The Canadian team comprised of Canadian Olympic gold medalist Andre De Grasse of Toronto, Ontario, Jerome Blake of Burnaby, British Columbia, Brendon Rodney of Etobicoke, Ontario, and Andre De Grasse of Scarborough, Ontario. De Grasse won his Olympic gold medal in the men’s 200 metres at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

Team Canada posted a winning time on Saturday of 37.48 seconds. The United States won the silver medal with a time of 37.55 seconds. Great Britain won the bronze medal with a time of 37.83 seconds. Canada reached the podium by 0.58 seconds over Jamaica, who had a fourth place time of 38.06 seconds.

There is no doubt that Jamaica has struggled in the relay since the retirement of Usain Bolt. The United States meanwhile were in control in the men’s 4×100 metre relay on Saturday until a poor exchange with just over 100 metres remaining in the race. The Canadian exchanges meanwhile were marvelous.

Canada won a second medal on Saturday. Marco Arop of Edmonton, Alberta won the bronze medal in the men’s 800 metres. Emmanuel Korir of Kenya won the gold medal with a time of 1:43.71. Djamel Sedjati of Algeria won the silver medal with a time of 1:44.14. Arop won the bronze medal by 0.26 seconds over Emmanuel Wanyonyi of Kenya with a time of 1:44.54. The medals for De Grasse, Blake, Rodney, Brown and Arop will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
