Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ontario made Canadian golf history on Sunday by becoming the first Canadian golfer to win two majors in a career. She achieved that mark by winning the 2022 Evian Championship in Evian-les-Bains, France.
Henderson posted a score of even-par 71 in the final round on Sunday for a score of -17 overall. However, it was good to enough to take the title. She beat American Sophia Schubert (-16) by one stroke, and five other golfers at -15. Those two back are Japan’s Mao Saigo, New Zealand’s Lydia Ko, England’s Charley Hull, South Korea’s Hyo Joo Kim, and Spain’s Carlota Ciganda.
Henderson’s prior major title was the 2016 Women’s PGA Championship. Of those players in contention, there were two other major champions–Kim and Ko. Kim won the 2014 Evian Masters, and Ko won the 2015 Evian Masters and 2016 ANA Inspiration.
In the history of Canadian golf, two other Canadians have won majors. Sandra Post of Oakville, Ontario won the 1968 LPGA Championship, and Mike Weir of Sarnia, Ontario won the 2003 Masters.
This is Henderson’s second win of the season and 12th of her career. By winning a second major, Henderson will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame at the end of her career. The season’s final major of 2022 is the Women’s British Open, which starts August 4.
