Allyson MacNutt stuns Kerri Einarson at the 2024 PointsBet Invitational

There was a stunning upset on Thursday at the 2024 PointsBet Invitational at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary, Alberta. In this intriguing single elimination knockout event, Allyson MacNutt of Halifax, Nova Scotia, the 14th seed, knocked out the third seed, and four-time Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Manitoba by a score of 8-6. MacNutt dominated the last four ends of the game as she scored the last four points.

MacNutt qualified for the 2024 PointsBet Invitational by winning the 2024 New Holland Canadian Junior Championship in Fort McMurray, Alberta. In the championship final, MacNutt defeated Ontario’s Julia Markle 9-5. MacNutt is currently an environmental science student at Dalhousie University.

There were three other lower seeds that were victorious on Thursday. On the women’s side, the 10th seed Kayla Skrlik of Calgary, upset the seventh seed Danielle Inglis of Toronto, Ontario, 9-2. Skrlik stole three points in the seventh end to take control.

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Felix Asselin of Montreal, Quebec, the 11th seed, upset Reid Carruthers of Winnipeg, Manitoba, 5-4, and Owen Purcell of Halifax, the 10th seed, upset Aaron Sluchinski of Calgary, the seventh seed, 11-6. Carruthers had won the first two PointsBet Invitational tournaments. In the Men’s Elite Eight on Friday, Brad Gushue of St. John’s, Newfoundland will face Rylan Kleiter of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Kevin Koe of Calgary will face Jordon McDonald of Winnipeg, Manitoba; Asselin will face Mike McEwen’s team based out of Regina, Saskatchewan; and Brad Jacobs’s Calgary based team faces Purcell. In the Women’s Elite Eight on Friday, Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Ontario faces Corryn Brown of Kamloops, British Columbia; Kaitlyn Lawes of Winnipeg faces Selena Sturmay of Edmonton, Alberta; Kate Cameron of Winnipeg faces MacNutt, and Chelsea Carey of Winnipeg faces Skrlik.
