Soccer Canada has named Casey Stoney of Basildon, England as their new head coach of the women’s senior program according to Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press on Monday. Stoney takes over from fellow Englishwoman Bev Priestman of Consett, England, who was fired due to her participation in the drone scandal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Priestman was the Canadian coach when Team Canada stunned the world by winning the gold medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

Stoney was a defender for Team England’s national soccer team from 2000 to 2017. She also played for Great Britain during the 2012 Olympic Games in London. In 135 international caps, Stoney had seven goals. She scored the game-winning goal in the 18th minute for Great Britain in a 3-0 win over Cameroon at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. For her soccer contributions, Stoney has received the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire from the British government.

As a club player, Stoney played two decades professionally in England for Arsenal, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Lincoln, and Liverpool. After her playing career Stoney managed Chelsea and Manchester United. She then went to North America, and coached the San Diego Wave of the National Women’s Soccer League from 2022 to 2024.
