Canada wins gold at U-18 Women’s World Hockey Championship

Team Canada won the gold medal on Sunday in the Under-18 Women’s World Hockey Championship. In the gold medal game in Vantaa, Finland, Canada defeated the United States 3-0. It is the eighth time Canada has won the gold medal in the tournament, as they previously won in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019, 2022 and 2023.

In the final, Canada got a shutout from Marilou Grenier of Quebec City, Quebec. She made 14 saves. Grenier had seven saves in the first period, five saves in the second period, and only two saves in the third period. The fact that the Canadian team allowed only two shots in 20 minutes and seven shots in 40 minutes, has also to do with the extraordinary Cansdian defense.

Offensively, the Canadian goal scorers were Caileigh Tiller of St. Catharines, Ontario, Stryker Zablocki of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, and Dorothy Copetti of Toronto, Ontario. Meanwhile, defenseman Sydney Sawyer led Team Canada with two points as she had two assists.

Canada won all six games they had in the tournament. They beat Slovakia 6-2, Switzerland 5-1 and Czechia 5-0 in Group B play. They then beat Japan 17-0 in the quarterfinals and Czechia 4-2 in the semifinals.

Canada’s leading scorer was Zablocki. who also led the tournament in scoring. She had eight goals and four assists for 12 points.
