The Toronto Blue Jays are still in playoff contention in the American League. On Sunday, the Blue Jays clobbered the Baltimore Orioles 8-1 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
The Blue Jays star player on Sunday was first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of Montreal, Quebec. Guerrero Jr. led the Blue Jays with four hits. Two of Guerrero Jr.’s four hits were extra base hits as he hit one double and one home run. Two other Blue Jays hit a home run on Sunday as third baseman Kazuma Okamoto hit his 32nd dinger of the year, and designated hitter George Springer hit his 15th home run.
There is no doubt it has been a poor season for Guerrero Jr. He only has nine home runs this season. We are talking about a player who led Major League Baseball with 48 home runs in 2021. Guerrero Jr. has also been poor on the base paths as he has been caught stealing a career high four times.
It was also a bounce back performance for Blue Jays starting pitcher Dylan Cease. After giving up four earned runs in five innings in a 6-5 loss to the Sacramento Athletics a week ago, Cease only gave up one earned run in five innings on Sunday. Cease was much better as the game went on. In the first inning, the first three Orioles batters reached base, but Cease got out of an impressive jam by striking out the next three batters.
With the win, the Blue Jays improved to a record of 75 wins and 75 losses. They are one game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the final playoff spot in the American League.
