Phillies sign Canadian closer Jordan Romano

According to Rogers Sportsnet on Monday, the Philadelphia Phillies have signed relief pitcher Jordan Romano of Markham, Ontario to a one-year contract worth $8.5 million. The Phillies are Romano’s second Major League Baseball team as he played the last six seasons since 2019 with the Toronto Blue Jays.

In 2024, it was a struggle for Romano. He had a record of one win and two losses with a poor earned run average of 6.59. In 15 games, Romano gave up 10 earned runs in 13 2/3 innings pitched.

For two consecutive seasons with the Blue Jays, Romano was an American League All-Star. In 2022, he pitched in 63 games, and had a record of five wins and four losses, with 36 saves and an earned run average of 2.11. In 64 innings pitched, Romano gave up 44 hits, 15 earned runs, and 21 walks, to go along with 73 strikeouts, three holds, and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.02.

In 2023, Romano pitched in 59 games and had a record of five wins and seven losses with an earned run average of 2.90. During 59 innings pitched, Romano had 36 saves, two holds, and 72 strikeouts, and gave up 48 hits, 24 walks, and 19 earned runs, to go along with a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.22. The holds came in a 10-1 Blue Jays win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 7 and in a 4-1 Blue Jays win over the Los Angeles Angels on July 28.
