Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal, Quebec has retired from diving at the age of 33 according to the Canadian Press on Wednesday. Benfeito won the bronze medal for Canada in the women’s 10 metre synchronized diving event at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with Roseline Filion of Laval, Quebec, and then won two more Olympic bronze medals for Canada at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. She placed third alongside Filion in the women’s 10 metre synchronized event for the second straight Olympic Games, and then won bronze in the women’s 10 metre platform.
Benfeito also won four medals for Canada at the World Aquatics Championships. She placed second alongside Filion at the 2013 World Aquatics Championship in Barcelona, Spain and the 2015 World Aquatics Championship in Kazan, Russia. Benfeito also won a silver medal in Kazan in 2015 in the non-Olympic event of mixed 10 metre synchronized diving alongside Vincent Riendeau of Montreal, Quebec. Benfeito’s fourth medal for Canada at the World Aquatics Championship came in Canadian water as she placed third in the women’s 10 metre synchronized platform diving competition alongside Filion at the 2005 World Aquatics Championship in Montreal.
At the Commonwealth Games, Benfeito was a two-time gold medalist in Glasgow in 2014. She won gold in the women’s 10 metre platform and the women’s 10 metre synchronized platform with Filion. At the Pan American Games, Benfeito won three gold medals. In 2015 in Toronto, Benfeito placed first in the women’s 10 metre synchronized diving event with Filion. Then in 2019 in Lima, Peru, Benfeito placed first in the women’s 10 metre synchronized diving event with Caeli McKay of Calgary, Alberta, and also won gold in the women’s 10 metre platform.
