Fourteen Canadians to begin the 2022 Major League Baseball season

As the 2022 Major League Baseball regular season starts on Thursday, there will be 14 Canadians on Major League rosters. They are Seattle Mariners pitcher Matt Brash of Kingston, Ontario; Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of Montreal, Quebec; Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman; Cleveland Guardians rightfielder Josh Naylor of Mississauga, Ontario; St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tyler O’Neill of Maple Ridge, British Columbia; Boston Red Sox pitchers James Paxton of Ladner, British Columbia, and Nick Pivetta of Maple Ridge, British Columbia; Guardians pitcher Cal Quantrill of Port Hope, Ontario; Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jordan Romano of Markham, Ontario; Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Soroka of Calgary, Alberta; New York Yankees pitcher Jameson Taillon; Seattle Mariners second baseman Abraham Toro of Greenfield Park, Quebec; Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto of Toronto, Ontario, and Chicago Cubs closer Rowan Wick of Vancouver, British Columbia.

It was an outstanding season for Guerrero Jr., who batted .311 with 48 home runs (led Major League Baseball) and 111 runs batted in during 2021. He led Major League Baseball with 123 runs scored, and 363 total bases. Guerrero also led the American League with .401 on base percentage and a .601 slugging percentage.

Freeman meanwhile won a World Series with the Braves, as he batted .300 with 31 home runs and 83 runs batted in during the regular season. He also led the National League with 120 runs scored.

Naylor batted .253 with seven home runs and 21 runs batted in. O’Neill batted .286 with 34 home runs and 80 runs batted in. Toro batted .239 with 11 home runs and 46 runs batted in. Votto batted .266 with 36 home runs and 99 runs batted in.

Pivetta had a record of nine wins and eight losses, an earned run average of 4.53 and 175 strikeouts. Quantrill was used as a starter and a reliever. He had a record of eight wins and three losses in 40 games with an earned run average of 2.89. Romano is the Blue Jays closer. Last year he had a record of seven wins, one loss, and 23 saves with an earned run average 2.14. Taillon had a record of eight wins, six losses, 140 strikeouts, and an earned run average of 4.30. Wick had a record of zero wins, one loss in 22 games, five saves, and an earned run average of 4.30.
