The Edmonton Oilers traded defenseman Cody Ceci of Ottawa, Ontario to the San Jose Sharks for defenseman Ty Emberson of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In addition to Ceci, the Sharks received a third round pick in the 2025 National Hockey League Draft.
The reason for this trade was purely due to economics. The Oilers were in cap space trouble, as the St. Louis Blues came to terms with restricted free agents Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway last week, and the Oilers have one week to match the offer. The trade with the Sharks gives the Oilers financial space to do just that.
Now it should be noted that Ceci struggled defensively at times this past season, especially playing with Darnell Nurse. The Sharks are Ceci’s fifth NHL franchise. He previously played six seasons with the Ottawa Senators from 2013 to 2019, one season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2019-20, one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2020-21, and thre last three seasons with the Oilers.
In 79 games this past season with the Oilers, Ceci had five goals and 20 assists for 25 points. He was a +12 with 14 penalty minutes, one shorthanded point, 97 shots on goal, 106 blocked shots, 91 hits, 25 takeaways, and 20 giveaways. Emberson meanwhile, had one goal and nine assists for 10 points in 30 games.
