Team Canada won the first game of the 2025 Four Nations Faceoff Men’s International Ice Hockey Tournament on Wednesday. From the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada beat Sweden 4-3 in overtime.

The Canadian overtime hero was Toronto Maple Leafs right winger Mitch Marner of Markham, Ontario, who scored from Canadian Olympic gold medalist and Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia at 6:06 of the extra period. Crosby won the gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Crosby led Canada in scoring with three assists. He helped set up Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon of Halifax, Nova Scotia with a first period goal on the power-play and Vegas Golden Knights right winger Mark Stone off Winnipeg, Manitoba with a second period goal. Meanwhile, the other Canadian goal scorer was Boston Bruins left winger Brad Marchand of Halifax.

Due to the fact Canada only won in overtime on Wednesday, they do not get the full three points. They next play the United States on Saturday from Montreal. The Americans begin their tournament on Thursday from Montreal when they face Finland.

The NHL announced on Wednesday that there will be World Cup events in 2028 and 2032. Eight nations will be participating in those events.
