The Edmonton Elks have signed defensive lineman Robbie Smith of Brampton, Ontario according to 3downnation.com on Wednesday. Smith joins an Elks squad hungry to make the playoffs in the Canadian Football League this season. Since the name change from Eskimos to Elks in 2020, the franchise has not played a single postseason game.
Smith is joining his second CFL franchise after five seasons with the Toronto Argonauts from 2019 to 2024. In 17 games last season, he had 31 defensive tackles, five special team tackles and six sacks. Smith’s most memorable game this past season came on September 14, 2024 in a 33-17 Argonauts win over the British Columbia Lions. Smith had season highs in sacks (three) and defensive tackles (four).
A product of Wilfrid Laurier University, Smith reached the 2016 Uteck Bowl before losing 36-6 to the Laval Rouge et Or. He played four seasons with the Golden Hawks from 2015 to 2018, before being drafted ninth overall in the 2019 CFL Draft. Smith was the third defensive lineman selected in the 2019 CFL Draft (behind Mathieu Betts of Montreal, Quebec, third overall out of Laval by Edmonton, and Jonathan Kongbo, fifth overall by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers).
Twice Smith won a Grey Cup title with the Argonauts. The first time came in 2022, and the second time in 2024.
