Melissa Lotholz of Barrhead, Alberta won a bronze medal in the women’s monobobsled event in Konigssee, Germany on Thursday. For Lotholz, it was her second career medal in women’s monobobsled, an event which will make its debut at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
Lotholz posted a time of one minute, 50.75 seconds. She reached the podium by 0.55 seconds as Margot Boch of Germany finished in fourth place with a time of 1:51.30. There was a two-way tie for the gold medal as Qing Ying of China and Breeana Walker of Australia were each on the top of the podium with a time of 1:50.73.
This was the second time a Canadian won a medal in a women’s monobobsled event this season. In Lake Placid, New York on November 18, 2019, Cynthia Appiah Serwaah of Toronto, Ontario won the gold medal with a time of 1:57.65. She beat out silver medalist Yooran Kim of South Korea and bronze medalist Ashleigh Werner of Australia.
Lotholz led a Canadian sweep at a women’s bobsled event at Calgary’s Canada Olympic Park last season. Lotholz posted a time of two minutes, 4.55 seconds to win the gold medal. Kori Hol of Calgary, Alberta won the silver medal and Appiah Serwaah won the bronze medal.
Team Canada won four other medals last year in women’s monobobsled. Christine De Bruin of Edmonton, Alberta won gold in women’s monobobsled in Konigssee on December 12, 2018. Appiah Serwaah won gold in Lake Placid on April 13, 2019 and silver in Lake Placid on April 12, 2019. Catherine Medeiros of Montreal, Quebec won bronze in Lake Placid on April 12, 2019.
