Matt Murray of Thunder Bay, Ontario recorded his 15th National Hockey League shutout on Tuesday. He accomplished the feat in a 4-0 Toronto Maple Leafs win over the Dallas Stars.
Murray made 15 saves in the first period, 17 saves in the second period, and 12 saves in the third period for 44 saves overall. This was the most number of saves Murray has made in recording a shutout in his National Hockey League career.
Of Murray’s 15 career NHL shutouts, this was his first with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Eleven have been with the Pittsburgh Penguins and three have been with the Ottawa Senators.
On the season, Murray now has a record of six wins, one regulation loss, and two losses in extra time. In addition to the shutout, he has a goals against average of 2.34 and a save percentage of .932.
Offensively for the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, Toronto got goals from two Canadians–John Tavares of Mississauga, Ontario, (who scored the game-winning goal from Mitch Marner of Markham, Ontario and Mark Giordano of Toronto, Ontario, at 4:51 of the first period), and Alexander Kerfoot of Vancouver, British Columbia, who closed out the scoring with 3:53 left in the third period.
Marner’s first period assist was significant as he now has a point in his last 20 games. This is a Toronto Maple Leafs record for most consecutive games with a point. Darryl Sittler of St. Jacobs, Ontario, and Ed Olczyk had the old Maple Leafs record with 18 straight games with a point.
The Maple Leafs are in second place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 16 wins, five regulation losses, and six losses in extra time for 38 points. They are three points back of the first place Boston Bruins.
