Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Quebec has won the first ever Northern Star Award. In what used to be named the Lou Marsh Award, Poulin was recognized as the Canadian Athlete of the Year. This past year she captained Canada to a gold medal at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, and a gold medal at the 2022 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Herning, Denmark.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, Poulin was second in the Olympic women’s hockey tournament in assists (11) and points (17). She only trailed her Canadian teammate Sarah Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario, who had 13 assists and 18 points. In the gold medal game of the Olympic tournament, Poulin scored the game-winning goal from Brianne Jenner of Oakville, Ontario, and Nurse. Poulin, in fact, contributed to all three of Canada’s goals in the Olympic gold medal game as she had two goals and one assist for three points in a 3-2 Canada win over the United States. The gold medal for Poulin in Beijing was her third career Olympic gold medal in women’s hockey, as she also won gold at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

At the 2022 Women’s World Hockey Championship, Poulin was once again second on Team Canada in scoring. She had five goals and five assists for 10 points, which was one point back of Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario, who had five goals and six assists for 11 points.
