
Manon Rheaume of Lac-Beauport, Quebec has been named the first general manager of Detroit’s expansion franchise in the Professional Women’s Hockey League according to Rogers Sportsnet on Friday. Detroit is one of four expansion teams joining the PWHL in 2026-27. One of them is in Canada as the PWHL is expanding to Hamilton, Ontario. The other two PWHL expansion franchises are in Las Vegas and San Jose.
Rheaume was a goaltender during her playing career. She won a silver medal for Canada at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, the first time women’s hockey was in the Olympic Winter Games. Rheaume also won a gold medal for Canada at the 1992 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Tampere, Finland and at the 1994 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Lake Placid, New York.
On September 23, 1992, Rheaume played an exhibition game for the Tampa Bay Lightning. She was also the first girl to play in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament and the first woman to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. In the QMJHL, Rheaume played for the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs.
For the last four seasons, Rheaume has been working for the Los Angeles Kings. Her roles have been team consultant, and prospects advisor in the hockey operations department.
