The New York Islanders of the National Hockey League signed centre Derick Brassard of Hull, Quebec on Wednesday. Brassard signed a one year contract worth $1.2 million according to puckpedia.com (formerly NHL Numbers).

It was a relatively disappointing 2018-19 season for Brassard as he had 14 goals and nine assists for 23 points with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers and Colorado Avalanche. It was an equally a disappointing defensive season for Brassard as he was a -19, the second worst plus/minus result of his 12 year NHL career. In addition to 23 points and a -19 in 70 games, Brassard had 39 penalty minutes, five power play points, 110 shots on goal, 283 faceoff wins, 15 blocked shots, 102 hits, 35 takeaways and 28 giveaways.

The Islanders become Brassard’s seventh NHL team. In addition to the three teams Brassard played for last season, he has played with the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators.

Brassard’s beat NHL season came in 2014-15 with the Rangers, when he had career highs in assists (41) and points (60). The Islanders exceeded expectations in 2018-19 as head coach Barry Trotz of Dauphin, Manitoba took an Islanders team that was barely expected to compete for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference to a 103 point regular season and a second place spot in the Metropolitan Division.
