Former NHL goaltender and broadcaster John Garrett dies at age 74

Former National Hockey League goaltender and broadcaster John Garrett of Trenton, Ontario passed away on Monday at the age of 74 according to the Canadian Press. At the time of his passing, Garrett was in Salt Lake City. He was in Utah to broadcast the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs between the Mammoth and Vegas Golden Knights, but was found dead in his hotel room Monday afternoon. As a result, Rogers Sportsnet used the ESPN feed for game four of the series, which was  won by Vegas 5-4 in overtime.

Garrett was s veteran hockey analyst. He first joined CTV in 1986 and was a well known television colour commentator for 40 years. Then from 2002 to 2023, Garrett was a regular colour commentator for Canucks broadcasts on Rogers Sportsnet.

Prior to being a broadcaster, Garrett played 207 NHL games from 1979 to 1985. He played there seasons with the Hartford Whalers from 1979 to 1982, two seasons with the Quebec Nordiques from 1982 to 1983, and three seasons with the Vancouver Canucks from 1983 to 1985. Garrett had a record of 68 wins, 91 losses and 37 ties with a goals against average of 4.28, save percentage of .866 and one shutout. The shutout came on March 2, 1983 in a 3-0 Canucks win over the Winnipeg Jets. Garrett made 31 saves.

In 1983, Garrett was selected to the NHL All-Star Game, and represented the Canucks and the Campbell Conference. That season, he had a record of 13 wins, 14 losses and five ties, with one shutout, a goals against average of 3.57 and a save percentage of .889.
