Felix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah-Annie Fernandez, each of Montreal, Quebec won their second round matches on Wednesday at the 2022 French Open. Auger-Aliassime defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Uruguay, 6-0, 6-3, 6-4, while Fernandez beat women’s doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 6-2.
Auger-Aliassime won the first set and third set rather easily on Wednesday, but the second set was a little tricky. Ugo Carabelli provided Auger-Aliassime with a significant challenge in a set that lasted 65 minutes. Auger-Aliassime had the better serve and returned very well. He had eight aces, and did not allow Ugo Carabaelli to record an ace.
Fernandez won rather easily to advance to the third round. Once again the serve was the big difference as Siniakova struggled mightily with her serve. The four-time grand slam women’s doubles champion (with 2021 French Open women’s singles champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic) had seven double faults, while Fernandez only had two. Fernandez was seeing the tennis ball very well off of Siniakova’s serve, as Fernandez broke Siniakova five times and Siniakova did not have an ace.
Fernandez will be in tough in the third round against Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic of Switzerland. However, Fernandez has beaten Bencic once before, 6-2, 7-6 in FedCup action in 2020.
Auger-Aliassime is up against Filip Krajinovic of Serbia. All-time, Auger-Aliassime is 2-2 against Krajinovic, the 55th ranked player in the world. Krajinovic beat Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the first round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2018, and 6-4, 7-5, in the first round of the Italian Open in 2020. Auger-Aliassime beat Krajinovic 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 in the first round of the Italian Open in 2021, and 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the Stockholm Open in 2021.
