Canadian Olympic gold medalist Ella Shelton of Ingersoll, Ontario has been named the Professional Women’s Hockey League First Star of the Week. Shelton had two goals and four assists for six points in two games as a defenseman for New York.
In both games, Shelton had one goal and two assists for three points. On April 30, New York beat Ottawa 4-3, and on May 4, New York beat Minnesota 5-2. In New York’s win over Ottawa, Shelton was one of four New York players who scored in the contest. She was joined by Jade Downie-Landry of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Kayla Vespa of Hamilton, Ontario, and Elizabeth Giguere of Quebec City, Quebec. Shelton was also one of two Canadians with a multi-point game. The other was Brooke Hobson of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, who had two assists.
In New York’s win over Minnesota, Shelton was one of three Canadians to score. Jaime Bourbonnais of Mississauga, Ontario scored twice and Downie-Landry scored once. Shelton was also one of three Canadians to have a multi-point game. The other two were Bourbonnais (two goals for two points) and Jessie Eldridge of Barrie, Ontario (two assists for two points).
Shelton won the gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing. In 2024 in the PWHL, Shelton had seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points in 24 games. She was a -6 with 12 penalty minutes, two faceoff wins, two power-play goals, one game-winning goal and 60 shots on goal. The game-winning goal came in a 4-0 New York win over Toronto on January 1.
Meanwhile, in other PWHL news, the semifinals are set. Toronto will play Minnesota and Montreal will play Boston.
