Canadian Olympic gold medalist Donovan Bailey of Oakville, Ontario will receive the Order of Canada in 2022. He won the gold medal for Canada in the men’s 100 metres and the men’s 4×100 metre relay at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. When Bailey won the gold medal in the men’s 4×100 metre relay alongside Robert Esmie of Sudbury, Ontario, Glenroy Gilbert of Ottawa, Ontario, and Bruny Surin of Montreal, Quebec.
Bailey previously received the Order of Ontario six years ago. A year later he received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame. It is actually quite surprising that Bailey is receiving the Order of Canada 26 years after being the most dominant sprinter in the biggest sporting event in the entire world.
There were two other notable Canadian sportspeople who are also receiving the Order of Canada. One is women’s hockey player Angela James of Toronto, Ontario, and the other is United States Tennis Association Chief Executive Stacey Allaster of Windsor, Ontario.
James won four gold medals for Canada at the Women’s World Hockey Championship in the 1990s (1990, 1992, 1994 and 1997). However it was the end of James’s career that was extremely shocking. She was a surprise cut on Team Canada at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano.
