Canada beats Turkey in the World Women’s Volleyball Nations League

Team Canada came away with a win over Turkey in the World Women’s Volleyball Nations League in Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday. The Canadians won in four sets on their home court, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex.

Alexa Gray of Lethbridge, Alberta led the Canadian team in scoring with 22 points. Two more Canadians reached double digits in scoring as Kiera Van Ryk of New Westminster, British Columbia had 21 points and Hilary Howe of Calgary, Alberta had 14 points. Gray generated her 22 points from 18 attack points and a team co-high four block points. Van Ryk generated her 21 points from a team-high 19 attack points and a co-high two aces. Howe generated her 14 points from eight attack points, a team co-high four block points and a team co-high two aces.

With the win, Canada improved to a record of four wins and five losses. That is good enough for tenth place in the standings. The top eight teams reach the quarterfinals in Ankara, Turkey starting July 13. Canada is one win back of China, host Turkey and Thailand at the moment in the standings. China, Turkey and Thailand are all at five wins and four losses and tied for sixth place. Poland is in ninth place at four wins and four losses. Canada plays Serbia on Canada Day, Germany on July 2 and the Netherlands on July 3.
