In a blockbuster trade at the trade deadline, the Cleveland Indians have acquired relief pitcher Cal Quantrill of Port Hope, Ontario, and outfielder Josh Naylor of Mississauga, Ontario from the San Diego Padres. Quantrill and Naylor were sent to Cleveland alongside catcher Austin Hedges and three minor leaguers for outfielder Greg Allen and starting pitcher Mike Clevinger. The minor leaguers heading to Cleveland are infielders Owen Miller and Gabriel Arias, alongside starting pitcher Joey Cantillo.

Naylor was batting .278 with the Padres in 2020. In 36 at bats, he scored four runs, had 10 hits, one triple, one home run, four runs batted in, one stolen base, one walk, a .316 on base percentage, a .417 slugging percentage, and 15 total bases. Naylor hit his home run in a 13-2 San Diego win over Colorado on Sunday.

Quantrill pitched 10 games for the Padres in 2019 and had a record of two wins and zero losses with am earned run average of 2.60. In 17 1/3 innings, he also had one save, and gave up 17 hits, five earned runs, two home runs, six walks, to go along with 18 strikeouts and a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 1.33. This season, Quantrill beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2 in a relief role on July 27, and then the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 on August 10. He also had a save in a 6-4 Padres win over the Texas Rangers on August 18, and a hold in a 4-3 Padres win over the Houston Astros on August 21.

Clevinger meanwhile is the biggest name in the trade. Not in the Indians good books when he went out in Chicago earlier this summer instead of quarantining, Clevinger was suspended by the team. In four games, he had a record of one win, one loss and an earned run average of 3.18.
