Canadian Olympic gold medalist Haley Irwin retires

According to the Canadian Press on Wednesday, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Haley Irwin of Thunder Bay, Ontario has retired from women’s hockey at age 31. Irwin won gold medals for Canada in women’s hockey at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. She also won an Olympic silver medal for Canada at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

At the Women’s World Hockey Championships, Irwin won five medals (one gold medal and four silver medals). The gold medal came at the 2012 Women’s World Hockey Championships in Burlington, Vermont.

In 12 games representing Canada at the Olympic Winter Games, Irwin had six goals and three assists for nine points. Irwin’s first Olympic goal was the game winning goal for Canada in an 18-0 win over Slovakia on February 13, 2010. Also at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Irwin scored two goals for Canada in their 5-0 win over Finland in the semifinals.

In all, Irwin had 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points in 47 games for Team Canada in international games. She also played for the University of Minnesota-Duluth of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Toronto Aeros and Mississauga Aeros of the National Women’s Hockey League, and the Calgary Inferno and Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League. This past year Irwin was an assistant coach with the Ryerson University Rams women’s hockey team.
