Canadian women’s boxer Mandy Bujold of Cobourg, Ontario has retired at the age of 34 according to CityNews Kitchener on Wednesday. Considered one of Canada’s best female boxers of all-time, Bujold won 11 national flyweight titles, back-to-back gold medals at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, the bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and at one time was ranked second in the world.

Bujold was never afraid to speak her mind on selected issues. She was strongly supportive of amateur boxers wearing head gear, withdrew her participation from representing Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, because of a requirement to move to Montreal, Quebec to train, and needed to go through the Court of Arbitration for Sport just to have the right to participate for Canada at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

Leading up to the last Olympic Summer Games, Bujold had qualified for the Olympic qualification tournament in May of 2021, however that event was cancelled because of coronavirus. The International Olympic Committee then determined that participants who did well in international events in 2018 or 2019 were allowed to participate. However, Bujold was not included because she was pregnant in this time. Bujold took her case to the CAS and won her right to participate.
