Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Claire Carver-Dias of Burlington, Ontario and former Canadian sprinter Sam Effah of Calgary, Alberta were named the co-chef de missions for Canada at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England from July 26 to August 8 on Thursday according to CBC Sports. Carver-Dias won a bronze medal for Canada in team synchronized swimming at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Synchronized swimming is now called artistic swimming.

This will be the second straight Commonwealth Games that Carver-Dias has been named Canada’s chef de mission. She was also the Canadian leader at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. In the overall medal standings from four years ago, Canada finished in third place with 82 medals. Australia had the most with 198 and England was in second with 136.

Carver-Dias won the bronze medal for Canada at the 2000 Olympic Games alongside Lyne Beaumont and Fanny Letourneau of Quebec City, Quebec, Erin Chan of Toronto, Ontario, Catherine Garceau and Jessica Chase of Montreal, Quebec, Kristin Normand of North York, Ontario, Jacinthe Taillon of Saint-Eustache, Quebec, and Reidun Tatham of Calgary, Alberta. Interestingly, this was the last time Canada has ever won a medal in artistic/synchronized swimming at the Olympic Games.

Effah meanwhile ran a time of 10.06 seconds at the North American, Central American, and Caribbean Athletics Association Championship in Miramar, Florida on July 9, 2010. He was also a two-time Canadian champion in the men’s 100 metres in 2010 and 2011.
