Canada wins opening game in women’s hockey at 2023 Winter Universiade

Team Canada won their first game in women’s hockey at the 2023 Winter Universiade in Lake Placid, New York on Wednesday. Kendra Woodland of Kamloops, British Columbia collected the shutout as she made 13 saves in a 4-0 Canada win over Slovakia.

Woodland made four saves in the first period, four saves in the second period, and five saves in the third period. The 22-year-old plays for the University of New Brunswick Reds in USport. in 13 games this season with the Reds, Woodland has a sparkling record of 11 wins and two losses, with a goals against average of 1.06, a save percentage of .963, and three shutouts.

Offensively, Canada got goals from Audrey-Anne Veillette of Drummondville, Quebec, Celine Frappier of Tecumseh, Ontario, Shae Sarah Demale of Red Deer, Alberta, and Madison Grace Willan of Edmonton, Alberta. Veillette and Demale both had a multi-point game as they each had one goal and one assist for two points. Veillette attends the University of Montreal. Frappier plays for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. Demale is with Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Willan plays for the University of Alberta Pandas.

Canada next plays Czechia on Saturday. Czechia won their first game on Wednesday as they trounced Great Britain 13-0.
