Team Canada is now one win away from qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. On Tuesday, in their final Group B game of the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic Women’s Soccer Qualification Tournament, Canada defeated Mexico 2-0 at the HEB Park in Edinburg, Texas.

With the Canadian win, Canada won Group B with a perfect record of three wins and zero losses. They outscored their opponents by 22 goals. What was most impressive in the three wins is that they did not give up a goal and won all three games by shutouts.

The Canadian win over Mexico was critical because they now avoid the United States in the semifinal. The victory meant that Canada will play Costa Rica in the deciding game for an Olympic berth on Friday in Carson, California. Costa Rica will be a tough opponent, but they are not the United States, who have won four gold medals in women’s soccer at the Olympic Games.

In Canada’s win over Mexico, the Canadians got goals from Christine Sinclair of Burnaby, British Columbia and Shelina Zadorsky of London, Ontario. Stephanie Labbe of Edmonton, Alberta made three saves for the shutout.

The United States meanwhile will play Mexico in the other semifinal. The winners of the semifinal in the CONCACAF tournament are headed to the Olympic Games.
