Brian Elliott of Newmarket, Ontario recorded his 40th career National Hockey League shutout on Monday. Elliott made only 16 saves as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.
Elliott made five saves in the first period, six saves in the second period and five saves in the third period. Darren Helm of St. Andrews, Manitoba led the Red Wings with six shots on goal.
This was Elliott’s second shutout of the season. He also made 19 saves in a 3-0 Flyers win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 21.
The Flyers got goals from Scott Laughton of Oakville, Ontario, Kevin Hayes and Matt Niskanen. Laughton had the game winning goal at 9:31 of the first period.
In 2019-20, Elliott has a record of 13 wins, five regulation losses and four losses in extra time. He has a goals against average of 2.81 and a save percentage of .903. Of Elliott’s 40 career shutouts, 25 have been with the Blues, nine have been with the Ottawa Senators, four with the Flyers and two with the Calgary Flames.
The Flyers currently have a record of 29 wins, 17 regulation losses and seven losses in extra time for 65 points. They are in the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and have two more points than the Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs.
