Canada wins bronze at the 2023 Women’s World Curling Championship

Team Canada won the bronze medal on Sunday at the 2023 Women’s World Curling Championships in Sandviken, Sweden. The Canadian team comprised of skip Kerri Einarson of Selkirk, Manitoba, third Val Sweeting of Redvers, Saskatchewan, second Shannon Birchard of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and lead Briane Harris of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The Canadians reached the podium on Sunday by beating the host team of Sweden, skipped by Olympic gold medalist Anna Hasselborg, 8-5 in the bronze medal game. Hasselborg won the gold medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

On Saturday, Canada split their two games. In the qualification game, Canada beat Japan 6-4 as they scored twice in the 11th end. In the semifinals, Canada lost 8-5 to Norway. The Norwegians then lost 6-3 to Switzerland in the gold medal game.

This was the second time, Einarson’s team won a medal at the Women’s World Curling Championship. They previously finished third at the 2022 Women’s World Curling Championships in Prince George, British Columbia.

In other Canadian curling news, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Brett Laing of Meaford, Ontario won the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championships in Sudbury, Ontario on Sunday. In the final, Jones and Laing beat Jocelyn Peterman of Red Deer, Alberta and Brett Gallant of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island 9-4 in the final. Jones, who won the gold medal for Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi in women’s curling, will now team up with Laing in representing Canada in the 2023 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships in Gangneung, South Korea from April 22-29.
