It was a mixture of emotions for 2019 United States Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario over the last few days in Miami. First she beat 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin of Pembroke Pines, Florida 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the Miami Masters. Then, Andreescu suffered a serious ankle injury in her fourth round match on Monday, in a 7-6, 0-2 loss to Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia.

The win over Kenin was significant because it was the second time in Miami that Andreescu beat a major champion. In the second round, Andreescu defeated 2021 United States Open champion Emma Raducanu of Great Britain 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

During Andreescu’s win over Kenin, Andreescu’s serve was working extremely well. She had seven aces, while Kenin had one ace. Kenin also had three double faults, while Andreescu only had one double fault. It should be noted that one of Andreescu’s serves came nowhere near the appropriate rectangle where the Canadian needed to get the ball into.

Alexandrova is the 18th seed in Miami. Before Andreescu’s injury, Alexandrova dominated the first set tiebreak as she bageled Andreescu 7-0. In the second set, Andreescu won both games and had all of the momentum before going down on the court in significant pain. In fact, Andreescu needed a wheelchair to help her off the court.
