It was a spectacular performance by Canadian swimmers this past week in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Team Canada won 15 medals, the third most in the competition, behind the United States at 30 medals, and Italy at 16 medals. The Canadian swimmers won seven gold medals, six silver medals and two bronze medals in the competition that uses 25 metre lengths, instead of the normal 50 metres.

Canadian women won 13 of the 15 medals for Canada in the event, which finished on Tuesday. The most surprising gold medalist was Maggie Mac Neil of London, Ontario. It should be no surprise that Mac Neil won gold, as she placed first in the women’s 100 metre butterfly at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, but that she won gold in the women’s 50 metre backstroke in a world record time of 25.27 seconds.

Mac Neil also won the women’s 100 metre butterfly with a time of 55.04 seconds. The other Canadian gold medalists were Sydney Pickrem of Halifax, Nova Scotia (women’s 200 metre individual medley with a time of 2:04.29), Tessa Cieplucha of Oakville, Ontario (women’s 400 metre individual medley with a time of 4:25.55), the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle relay team, and the women’s 4×200 metre freestyle relay team. In the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle relay, Canada shared the gold medal with the United States as they had the same time of 3:28.52.
