Canada trounces Slovakia 5-1 at 2026 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships

Team Canada remains undefeated at the 2026 International Ice Hockey Federation World Men’s Hockey Championships. On Sunday in Fribourg, Switzerland, Canada trounced Slovakia by a score of 5-1.

Four Canadians had a multi-point game. Canadian Olympic gold medalist and Toronto Maple Leafs centre John Tavares of Mississauga, Ontario, Winnipeg Jets centre Gabriel Vilardi of Kingston, Ontario, San Jose Sharks centre and Team Canada captain Macklin Celebrini of Vancouver, British Columbia and Nashville Predators centre Ryan O’Reilly of Clinton, Ontario all had one goal and one assist for two points. Tavares won gold for Canada in men’s ice hockey at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. 

On Sunday, the game was tied at one goal apiece after 40 minutes. Then Canada dominated the third period as they scored four goals. The four third period goals came in a span of seven minutes and seven seconds.

Canada is the only team undefeated in Group B. They have a record of six wins (five regulation wins and one overtime win) and zero losses for 17 points. Canada has four more points than second place Czech Republic, which will be there Tuesday opponent.

In Group A, there are two teams undefeated at six wins and zero losses. They are Switzerland and Finland.
