Team Canada won one game and lost one game on the second day of mixed doubles curling at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. After an opening game loss by the score of 6-4 to Great Britain, the Canadian team of John Morris of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Ontario defeated Norway 7-6 in draw four.
Remember at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Morris and Kaitlyn Lawes of Winnipeg, Manitoba lost their opening game of the mixed doubles curling tournament by a score of 9-6 to Norway. They then rattled off eight consecutive wins to win Olympic gold.
In the Canadian win over Norway on Thursday, it was the second end which was key for Canada. That is because they were able to score four points to take a commanding 4-2 lead. Morris had a significant double takeout which removed three Norwegian stones in the four foot. Then in the eighth end, Kristin Skaslien missed her final shot, which meant Homan was not required to throw her final shot. Canada’s next game is against Switzerland, the reigning Olympic silver medalists and 2017 world mixed doubles champions, on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. MT.
Meanwhile at the 2022 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Thunder Bay, Ontario, four teams have qualified for the championship round. Team Canada has a perfect record of seven wins and zero losses. They are joined by New Brunswick (6-1), the first Wildcard team skipped by Sudbury’s Tracy Fleury (6-1), and Nova Scotia (5-2).
