Canada trounces Switzerland 12-1 to begin the Olympic Winter Games hockey tournament

Team Canada came away with a dominant 12-1 win over Switzerland on Wednesday evening (in Canada), and Thursday afternoon (in China), in their first game of the Olympic women’s hockey tournament at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. The win came despite the fact they lost forward Melodie Daoust of Valleyfield, Quebec with an undisclosed injury after a hard hit into the boards.

Nine players on Team Canada registered a multi-point game in the 11-goal win. Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ontario and Claire Thompson of Toronto, Ontario led the Canadian attack with five points each. Spooner had two goals and three assists, and Thompson had one goal and four assists.

Two Canadian players had four points each. Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton, Nova Scotia had two goals and two assists, while Rebecca Johnston of Sudbury, Ontario had one goal and three assists.

Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario had two goals and one assist for three points. She scored Canada’s first two goals of the game, including the game-winning goal. Laura Stacey of Mississauga, Ontario scored twice, while Erin Ambrose of Keswick, Ontario, and Ashton Bell of Deloraine, Manitoba each had one goal and one assist.

In NHL news, Cam Talbot of Caledonia, Ontario notched his 25th career shutout on Wednesday in a 5-0 Minnesota Wild win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Meanwhile, Pat Verbeek of Sarnia, Ontario has been named the new general manager of the Anaheim Ducks.
