Canada reaches quarterfinals of 2022 Women’s Rugby World Cup

Team Canada qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2022 Women’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand on Saturday. The Canadians improved to a record of two wins and zero losses with a 22-12 win over Italy from Waitakere Stadium in Auckland.

Emily Tuttosi of Souris, Manitoba had two tries, while Sara Kaljuvee of Toronto, Ontario and Paige Farries of Red Deer, Alberta had one try each. The Canadians only successfully kicked one of their four conversion attempts through the uprights after their four tries, as Brianna Miller of Pointe-Claire, Quebec made her convert in the 19th minute after the Farries try in the 18th minute.

Team Canada scored 22 unanswered points after Italy opened the scoring with a try in the first minute. Italy then closed out the scoring with a converted try in the 80th minute.

The Canadians opened the 2022 Women’s Rugby World Cup with a 41-5 win over Japan last weekend in Whangarei, New Zealand. They are one of three undefeated teams in the tournament to date, as they are joined by England and New Zealand. England has beaten Fiji 84-19 and France 13-7. New Zealand has beaten Australia 41-17 and Wales 56-12.

Canada has one more game prior to the quarterfinals. They play the United States on October 23 with first place on the line in Pool B.
