A Canadian has never won a major tournament in a Senior Men’s Golf Championship. Canadian golf history could be made on Sunday. That is because Stephen Ames of Vancouver, British Columbia is in first place at -12 and 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir of Sarnia, Ontario is in second place after three rounds of the 2022 Senior PGA Championship in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
On Saturday, Ames entered the third round in a tie with American Scott McCarron at -8 for first place. Now Ames is in the lead all by himself at -12. Meanwhile, Weir has moved one position up from third place to second place, as he is two strokes back of Ames at -10.
From the 37th to the 54th holes in the tournament, Ames shot a score of four-under-par 67. He had five birdies and one bogey. Ames birdied the second, third, ninth, 10th, and 12th holes, and bogeyed the seventh.
Weir had seven birdies, one bogey and one double bogey, as he also was -4 in round three. He birdied the fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth, 10th, 15th, and 18th holes, bogeyed the third hole, and double bogeyed the 17th hole. The 17th was a disastrous hole for Weir as the golf ball from his tee shot hit a rake, and ended up in a swamp.
There are two other golfers in contention. Two-time Masters champion Bernard Langer of Germany is at -10 and tied for second place with Weir. Meanwhile American Paul Goydos of Long Beach, California is alone in fourth at -9.
