Two Canadians are set to compete at the 2022 Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. In the biggest open wheel race of the 2022 auto racing season, Devlin DeFrancesco of Toronto, Ontario is starting 24th, and Dalton Kellett of Stouffville, Ontario is starting 29th.
DeFrancesco is a rookie in the IndyCar Series in 2022 with Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport. Kellett, a graduate in engineering physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, (one of the most prestigious universities in Canada), is in his fourth season with A.J. Foyt Enterprises. DeFrancesco will be using a Honda engine and driving car number 29. Kellett will be using a Chevrolet engine and driving car number 4.
Scott Dixon of New Zealand has the pole position. He previously won the Indianapolis 500 in 2008. Helio Castroneves of Brazil is the defending champion. He will start 27th.
DeFrancesco is one of seven rookies in the 2022 Indianapolis 500. He is joined by Romain Grosjean of France (starting ninth), two-time Daytona 500 champion Jimmie Johnson of the United States (starting 12th), David Malukas of the United States (starting 13th), Callum Ilott of Great Britain (starting 19th), Kyle Kirkwood of the United States (starting 28th) and Christian Lundgaard of Denmark (starting 31st). Like Johnson, Grosjean has plenty of auto racing experience despite being a rookie, as he previously drove in Formula One.
