Andre de Grasse wins gold in the men’s 100 metres in IAAF Diamond League Event in Morocco

Canadian Olympic silver medalist Andre de Grasse of Scarborough, Ontario won the gold medal in the men’s 200 metres at an International Association of Athletics Federation Diamond League event in Rabat, Morocco on Sunday. De Grasse won his seventh career medal (all gold medals) in the Diamond League and second career medal in Rabat as he also won the men’s 200 metres in Morocco in 2017.

De Grasse posted a winning time on Sunday of 20.19 seconds. Ramil Guliyev of Turkey won the silver medal with a time of 20.28 seconds. Alex Quinonez of Ecuador won the bronze medal with a time of 20.3 seconds. De Grasse earned a medal by 0.32 seconds over Kenneth Bednarek of the United States, as Bednarek posted a fourth place time of 20.51 seconds.

At the 2016 Olympic Games, De Grasse won the silver medal in the men’s 200 metres and a bronze medal in the men’s 100 metres. He also won a bronze medal in the men’s 4×100 metre relay with Akeem Haynes of Calgary, Alberta, Aaron Brown of Toronto, Ontario, Brendon Rodney of Etobicoke, Ontario and Mobolade Ajomale of Richmond Hill, Ontario.

The gold medal for De Grasse was not the only medal won by a Canadian on Sunday in Morocco. Crystal Emmanuel of Scarborough, Ontario won her second Diamond League medal in a week and third career Diamond League medal as she won the bronze medal in the women’s 100 metres. Emmanuel posted a third place time of 11.3 seconds. Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria won the gold medal with a time of 11.05 seconds and Marie-Josee Ta Lou of Ivory Coast won the silver medal with a time 11.09 seconds. Emmanuel earned a medal by .02 seconds over Orlann Ombissa-Dzangue of France, who was in fourth place with a time of 11.32 seconds.

De Grasse won three medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He won a silver medal in the men’s 200 metres, a bronze medal in the men’s 100 metres and a bronze medal in the men’s 4×100 metre relay with Akeem Haynes of Calgary, Alberta, Aaron Brown of Toronto, Ontario, Brendon Rodney of Etobicoke, Ontario and Mobolade Ajomale of Richmond Hill, Ontario. The medals for De Grasse and Emmanuel in Morocco will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
