Brooke Voigt of Fort McMurray, Alberta and Jasmine Baird of Mississauga, Ontario won silver and bronze respectively at a women’s World Cup slopestyle snowboarding event in Seiser Alm, Italy on Saturday. For Voigt it was her fifth career World Cup slopestyle snowboarding medal and for Baird, it was her first World Cup medal.
Voigt posted a silver medal score of 76. Isabel Derungs of Switzerland won the gold medal with a score of 79.15. Baird won the bronze medal with a score of 73.25.
Voigt earned a podium spot by 3.55 points and Baird got on to the podium by a narrow 0.8 points. Sina Candrian of Switzerland finished in fourth place with a score of 72.45 points.
With the podium results, Voigt and Baird moved into the top 15 in the World Cup women’s slopestyle snowboarding standings for 2018-19. Voigt has 800 points and Baird has 600 points. The World Cup leader is Miyabi Onitsuka of Japan with 2000 points.
Prior to Saturday, Voigt’s four World Cup slopestyle snowboarding medals have come in Canada. She won World Cup slopestyle snowboarding silver in Calgary on January 30, 2010 and on February 26, 2011, a World Cup silver in Stoneham, Quebec on February 26, 2012 and a World Cup bronze in Quebec City, Quebec on February 12, 2017.
There are one more women’s slopestyle snowboarding event this season. It is in Mammoth Mountain, California on March 8. The World Cup medals for Voigt and Baird will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
