As the 2026 Commonwealth Games is set to begin a week from now in Glasgow, Scotland, the Canadian swim team will include two Alberta swimmers who have had an excellent 2026 season. Oliver Dawson of Grande Prairie, Alberta and Lorne Wigginton of Calgary, Alberta have set Canadian records in the pool this calendar year.
Dawson set two Canadian records in the AP Race London International in May. They came in the men’s 50 metre breaststroke and men’s 100 metre breaststroke in England. Dawson had a time of 27.29 seconds in finishing in fourth place in the heats in the men’s 50 metre breaststroke on May 23, and then had a time of 59.33 seconds in winning the gold medal in the men’s 100 metre breaststroke on May 24.
Scott Dickens of Ancaster, Ontario had the old Canadian records in the men’s 50 metre breaststroke and men’s 100 metre breaststroke. He had a time of 27.45 seconds in the men’s 50 metre breaststroke in finishing in 17th place at the 2009 World Aquatics Championships in Rome, and a time of 59.85 seconds in the heats in the men’s 100 metre breaststroke at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Wigginton broke the Canadian record in the men’s 400 metre individual medley at the 2026 Canadian National Swimming Trials in Montreal on July 6. He had a time of 4:11.32. Brian Johns of Regina, Saskatchewan had the old record, as he had a time of 4:11.41 in the heats at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
