Northern Super League expanding to Winnipeg

The Northern Super League is expanding to Winnipeg, Manitoba according to Shireen Ahmed of CBC Sports on Tuesday. Winnipeg will start playing in the Canadian women’s soccer league in 2027. The six current teams in the NSL are the Calgary Wild FC, the Halifax Tides FC, the Montreal Roses FC, the Ottawa Rapid FC, AFC Toronto and the Vancouver Rise FC.

Winnipeg will play at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex. The facility currently hosts Winnipeg Lucania FC in the Prairies Premier League.

One person who has made a significant contribution of bringing a NSL expansion team to Winnipeg, and will be an instrumental person going forward is Canadian Olympic gold medalist Desiree Scott of Winnipeg. Scott was the co-founder of the expansion team and will be the team’s Vice President of Community and Player Experience. Scott won a gold medal in women’s soccer at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

The top two teams in the NSL at the moment are the Rapid and Roses. The Rapid are at eight wins, two losses and one draw for 25 points and the Roses are at six wins, two losses and three draws for 21 points. The NSL’s leading scorer is Delaney Baie Pridham of Toronto, Ontario. Baie Pridham, who has six goals, is a forward and midfielder for the Rapid.
