Tammara Thibeault and Charlie Cavanagh reach semifinals of 2022 Women’s World Boxing Championships

Tammara Thibeault of Saint-Georges, Quebec and Charlie Cavanagh of Saint John, New Brunswick have reached semifinals of the 2022 International Boxing Association Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. By reaching the semifinals, both Thibeault and Cavanagh are guaranteed to win a medal because there is no bronze medal match.

In the welterweight division, Cavanagh defeated Rosie Eccles of Great Britain 3-2 in the first round, Stephanie Pineiro of Puerto Rico 3-2 in the second round, and Ivanusa Moreira of Cape Verde 5-0 in the quarterfinals. She will fight Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in one of two semifinals on Wednesday. Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey, the reigning Olympic champion and world champion, will fight Janjaem Suwannapheng of Thailand in the other semifinal.

In the women’s middleweight division, Thibeault received a first round bye before beating Naomi Graham of the United States 5-0 in the second round, and then Caitlin Parker of Australia 5-0 in the quarterfinals. She will next face Rady Gramane of Mozambique in one of two semifinals. The other semifinal has Atheyna Bylon of Panama versus Davina Michel of France.

Thibeault previously won a bronze medal at the 2019 Women’s World Boxing Championships in Ulan-Ude, Russia. Three years ago she also defeated Graham, this time in the quarterfinals.
